From “Super Saturday” to Sensational Saturday!

WHAT. JUST. HAPPENED.

There is no denying that the teams that went through, went through because they deserved to! The French were fabulous, Uruguay were top drawer and to suggest otherwise is ridiculous.

This was the France side that we have been waiting for. They looked fearless. Like a lion let loose and they did not hold back putting four goals past Sampaoli’s shambolic Argentina.

Uruguay made it clear that they didn’t make it here by accident. Pepe’s somewhat irrelevant equaliser was the first goal they have conceded this far and Edison Cavani? My goodness. Two phenomenal strikes that had me with my hands on my head in disbelief.

If you read yesterday’s blog you’ll know I was WAY off with my predictions and how glad I am that I was. It made for such a good round of fixtures.

Croatia vs Denmark

This is my one of my favourite games of the round of 16! Croatia are clear favourites after making Argentina look like schoolboys, collecting maximum points and seeing off Iceland after making 8 changes to their team. Don’t write the Danes off just yet.

The Danes are currently of a national record run of 18 games undefeated in all competitions. They have kept six clean sheets in their last 7 games and, just like Croatia, have not conceded in open play this World Cup!

It is going to be a good one but I think the Croats have pipped this one.

Prediction: 3-1

Spain vs Russia

Spain, who are unbeaten in 23 games since losing to Italy at Euro 2016, have yet to hit the heady heights with which they are usually associated, but Russia may be a team against whom they can cut loose. They will certainly attempt to dominate the ball.

La Roja led the tournament for passes attempted (2,294) and completed (2,089) in the group stage, making nearly 300 more of each than any other nation. Spain have also had 41 shots from open play, 15 more than their opponents, and have created 42 goal scoring chances, 24 more than the Russians.

The home team, however, have worked like Trojans and have been clinical when opportunities have come knocking. Russia are ranked bottom at this tournament for chances created, with 18, but have still managed to score eight goals, while in terms of distance covered in the group stage (331km) they ranked third. Being roared on by an 80,000 capacity-crowd may add yet more miles to their legs.

I wouldn’t write off an upset after today but I can’t see anything other than a Spain win.

Prediction: 2-1

A Mediterranean Affair

Today was a day hand-picked for the neutral. After the jaw-dropping display of six shared goals in Sochi last Friday, we expected the two teams from the Mediterranean to run up a cricket score and brush aside their seemingly ‘lesser’ opponents.

The Spaniards went up against an Iran side who, against the run of play, got an injury time winner in their group opener against Morocco while Portugal went up against the Moroccans: a side hellbent on an upset.

Morocco to Moscow

It was the North African side who looked the more dangerous of the two throughout the entire game. However, a sumptuous sidestep from Ronaldo left him unmarked in the penalty area to head the Portuguese ahead after just four minutes.ronaldo-goal

Morocco dusted themselves off and fought tooth and nail to the last minute where unfortunately, the blow of the referee’s whistle spelled home time for the Africans.

9892048-3x2-700x467Despite being the first side to be eliminated from the tournament, they can count themselves unlucky to leave both their opening games empty handed.

The Africans struggled in front of goal and today would have been a much different tale had they not lacked some striking conviction: of their 15 shots on goal, only 4 were on target and worse yet, only 2 efforts gave the Portuguese shot stopper something to worry about.

While it was, yet again, the Ronaldo show, being Portugal’s only goalscorer of the campaign with 4 goal in 2 matches, Morocco were the real heroes of the day. Their passion, zeal and devotion was admirable if not effective.

You Shall Not Pass

The Portuguese weren’t the only side to find themselves up against “whatever the cost” kind of defending. The 2010 victors were afforded no favours from their opponents knowing that a draw was enough to see the Spanish into the next round with one game left.

The stats highlight the beauty of the Spaniard’s game with 81% possession at halftime and finishing the game with a 90% pass accuracy rate but it was the dogged defending of the Iranians that will really impress (or frustrate) you!

697344-spain-twitter-5Iran had went 1,121 minutes before conceding to a ridiculously fortuitous rebound off of Diego Costa in the second half- a man they had isolated and cut off completely having received only 12 touches of the ball by halftime.

After a sublime strike from Sergio Busquets and Gerard Pique failing to bundle the ball in the net from a yard out, the Middle Eastern side looked to have equalised but it wasn’t long before VAR became the real Spanish hero of the night.

I am a huge admirer of Real Madrid man, Isco, and this extract from a BBC article by Luke Reddy sums up the integral role he plays in this side:

“Isco was at the heart of Spain’s play and saw more of the ball than anyone on the pitch with 138 touches. He completed 92% of his passes and played eight crosses – another high. He found shooting opportunities and also won the ball back as many times as anyone else in his side. On a night when the Iran defense deserved praise, he was key in wearing them down.”

The man is simply untouchable! I would not be even slightly surprised if he found himself house hunting in England come September.

A Tale of Vikings and VAR

Matchday 2 brought an early start for those of us on the American East Coast with France kicking the days action off against the Aussies and after a strong cup of coffee, the world awaited what would surely be the rallying reply of Lionel Messi.

With our first taste of a quadruple matchday it was fair to assume that it would be an action packed day. Messi, Mandzukic, Aguero and Modric, the stage was set for someone to steal the show! But oh no. Today’s centre stage was well and truly taken by the 330,000 people of Iceland.

Valiant Vikings

Iceland are the second team of every football fan around the globe… unless of course you’re English!

With 1 in every 7000 Icelandic men playing for Iceland at the World Cup, they are just a third of the size of any country to ever qualify for the competition!

The makeshift team of part time blue collar workers made their first ever appearance at a World Cup one for the books. Nobody foresaw the Nords containing an Argentinian side bursting with expertise and experience, yet it was the 11 men of Iceland who came closest to breaking the deadlock.

Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero drew first blood as he rocketed a close range effort into the roof of the Icelandic net after 19 minutes but just four minutes later, Alfred Finnbogason popped up to level the scoring.

Messi’s Argentina barraged the Viking fortress without any success before his side were controversially awarded a penalty in the second half and it’s executer was never in doubt.

This was the moment the world had been waiting for. Lionel Messi with his game changing reply to his Portuguese counterpart. Surely Iceland should start walking back toward the centre circle. No?

The No. 10 couldn’t beat part time film producer Hannes Halldorsson in the Icelandic goal and the Nords saw off the remainder of the game.

Taxi for VAR?

Football purists around the world have always been a little squinty-eyed when it comes to video assistant refereeing and it took just two days to reintroduce us to the debate.

Of today’s four games, VAR made a significant contribution in all but one. Awarding 3 penalties and a late game winner.

VARfraaus1606Beyond what it did award, let’s talk about what it didn’t. Argentina will claim that they could easily have had another one, maybe two, penalties in that game while Iceland will argue that it should have overthrown the one that was given.

The reluctance of referees to pause the game defeats the purpose of VAR to perfect decision making.

It will be incredibly interesting to see how far VAR can make it in the tournament before football fans call for it’s head on a platter!

Jamie, what the heck is VAR?

Tomorrow see’s the reigning champions, Germany, face Mexico in the late kickoff. Meanwhile Serbia and Costa Rica will kick the day off before Switzerland attempt to strike a blow to Brazil’s efforts at a record breaking sixth World Cup championship!

What an opening few days- more of the same please!
